The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) Program is widely considered the gold standard in global finance. It’s trusted by top firms, respected in every boardroom, and opens doors to elite roles in investment banking, asset management, and equity research.

But let’s face the reality: Level 1 can feel incredibly overwhelming.

With 10 subjects and thousands of pages of study material, the biggest reason students fail isn't a lack of intelligence—it’s a lack of strategy. At The Valuation School, our philosophy is simple: "Stop Memorizing. Start Understanding." If you try to rote-learn your way through the CFA, the sheer volume of formulas will break you. But if you connect the concepts to real-world scenarios, passing becomes a byproduct of your understanding.

If you’re serious about building a finance career and clearing Level 1 on your first attempt, here is a practical, step-by-step 6-month study roadmap.

Month 1 & 2: Tackle "The Heavyweights"

When starting your preparation, you have the most energy and focus. Do not waste this time on the easiest subjects. Dive straight into the most mechanically heavy and highly-weighted topics.

  • Quantitative Methods (6-9%): Quants is the mathematical foundation for the rest of the curriculum. You need to master the Time Value of Money (TVM), probability, and basic statistics. Get comfortable with your financial calculator from day one.
  • Financial Statement Analysis / FSA (11-14%): This is the monster of Level 1. You cannot pass the exam if you are weak in FSA. Focus deeply on understanding cash flows, revenue recognition, inventory methods (LIFO/FIFO), and long-lived assets. (Pro Tip: If you struggle with reading financial statements, practical programs like our Equity Research Cohort can give you a massive real-world edge).
  • Fixed Income (11-14%): Fixed income is highly conceptual. Don't just memorize duration and convexity—understand why bond prices move inversely to interest rates.

Month 3 & 4: Master "The Core Concepts"

By month three, you’ve built a solid mathematical and accounting base. Now, it’s time to look at how businesses operate and how markets price them.

  • Equity Investments (11-14%): This is where finance gets fun. You'll learn market organization, indices, and basic valuation multiples. If you want to truly master this beyond the textbook, hands-on practice in Advanced Valuation and Financial Modelling (AVFM) will make these concepts second nature.
  • Corporate Issuers (6-9%): Previously known as Corporate Finance, this section teaches you how companies raise and manage capital. Focus on Cost of Capital (WACC) and capital allocation.
  • Economics (6-9%): Microeconomics and Macroeconomics can be vast. Focus heavily on currency exchange rates, business cycles, and monetary/fiscal policy.

Month 5: The Fillers & The Ethics Engine

With the bulk of the technical material behind you, use month five to tackle the final subjects and the most critical part of the exam.

  • Derivatives (5-8%) & Alternative Investments (7-8%): These sections are relatively short but yield high marks if understood conceptually. Grasp the basics of forwards, futures, options, swaps, and the structures of hedge funds and private equity.
  • Ethical and Professional Standards (15-20%): Do not study Ethics in Month 1! Ethics requires you to internalize the CFA Institute Code and Standards. If you study it too early, you will forget the nuances. Read the case studies, understand the spirit of the rules, and practice as many questions as possible in the weeks leading up to the exam.

Month 6: The Revision & Mock Strategy

The final 30 days are what separate the passing candidates from the failing ones. Do not read new material in the last month.

  1. Chapter-wise MCQs: Start testing your knowledge. Identify your weak areas and re-read only those specific summaries.
  2. Mock Exams: You need to simulate the real exam environment. Sit for at least 3 to 4 full-length mocks. Manage your time to ensure you can answer every question in the allotted 90 seconds.
  3. Review Mistakes: Taking a mock exam is only 50% of the work. Spending 3 hours reviewing why you got a question wrong is the other 50%.
